Brockville & Westport Railway Overview

1871 - 1884   Brockville & Westport Railway
The railway started out as the Brockille and Westport Railway incorporated February 15, 1871, but the charter was never acted on, and the railway only existed on paper.

1884 - 1903   Brockville, Westport & Sault Ste Marie Railway
Another attempt in March 1884 incorporated the Brockville, Westport and Sault Ste Marie Railway, which like the first saw a plan to build a railway from Brockville to Westport in Eastern Ontario. Construction started on the BW&SSM on June 17, 1886, with the first train from Westport to Brockville on March 4, 1888, although from Lyn Jct with the Grand Trunk to Brockville, the train travelled over the Grand Trunk into Brockville, as the trestle over the Grand Trunk and the line to the Church street station was not complete yet.

On June 1889, the first BW&SSM train used the new trestle over the Grand Trunk to access the BW&SSM Church Street station. In December 1894 the railway was placed into receivership and on January 20, 1903 it was sold under judicial sale to a New York Syndicate (Holm, Gerken, Schmitt, King), which meant the end of the BW&SSM.

1903 - 1914   Brockville, Westport & Northwestern Railway
October 24, 1903 the Brockville, Westport and Northwestern Railway was incorporated, and on November 23, 1903 the New York Syndicate transfers ownership to the BW&NW.

On April 9, 1910, Martin Zimmerman of New York agrees to gain control of  BW&NW shares & bonds for Mackenzie, Mann & Co., principals of the Canadian Northern Railway, for $362,000. On June 15 of the same year Mackenzie, Mann & Co. gain majority control of BW&NW shares and bonds. However there are still outstanding bonds preventing then from gaining a complete title to the railway. December 14, 1911 saw the railway sold at judicial sale to R.P. Ormsby, Secretary of the CNoR, for $250,000 in BW&NW bonds. The sale completes the title to the railway at the expense of the bondholders.

1914 - 1918   Canadian Northern Railway
Control of the Brockville, Westport and Northwestern Railway is formally transferred by Ormsby to the Canadian Northern Railway on July 10, 1914. On November 5, 1916 control of the CNoR passes to the Government of Canada.

1918 - 1953  Canadian National Railways
The Canadian Northern Railway was amalgamated with the Canadian National Railways on December 20, 1918.

In 1921 the former B&W line from Centre Street in Brockville to Lyn Junction was abandoned, then in 1925 the line was dismantled.

An application to abandon the B&W from Lyn Junction to Westport by the CNR was filed with the Board of Transport Commissioners on June 18, 1952.

The last regular CNR train operated on the B&W on August 30, 1952. On September 4, 1952 a special train went up the line to pick up all moveable equipment along the line.

October 6, 1952 the CNR dismantled the Brockville & Westport line from between Athens and Soperton on to Westport. Then between May 5 and July 31 1953 the rest of the line was dismantled from Lyn Junction to between Athens and Soperton.
